Blackgate cap leg is unplugged help

hi guys

i accidentally unplugged one of the leg of the blackgate caps. a little bit of somekind of oil is coming out. i plug it back and run small voltage and its still working. still have the same capacitance

my question:
is it will last as undamaged blackgate? or i better of get a new one?
how is the blackgate stop working? is it shorted or open?

I once put the legs of a smaller black gate f in shape and it started leaking electrolyte .
I threw it away.

i think when i solder it in, there is a sound like hot rod inside a water....

however its inside the circuit now. been servicing for few hours and no sign of electrolyte leakage

should i throw it away?

If it's leaking electrolyte,I'd replace it.

if the lead came off and electrolyte came out its best to just replace it. It will dry out in no time. there may not be problems now but there will be.

Thanks for the inputs. I just replace it for the peace of mind. Turn out it still measure same uf.

What's the possibility of electrolytic fail and short? Do they fail open or short?

i dont think it would fail. just dry out and age faster then normal. Peace of mind is good enough reason for me to do the same.

Not a suggestion just a question out of interest. If one were to use epoxy (or other similar or better material) to seal it back up, would it be again as trustworthy as the original?

To answer the above...not likely. The foil in the cap is bonded to the lead. When the lead comes out, the foil is torn.

When the lead is reinserted, the lead merely touches the foil instead of being bonded to it. Intermittent failures could be a significant issue, especially if the cap is subject to vibration.


If its not sealed up at all, it will dry out and fail sooner. It will likely fail open circuit.
