This is a question for mainly Canadians. I'm looking for suppliers of DIY parts. i've been looking and searching and I think I know about a couple.

digikey and mouse for electronic supplies,
Solen for drivers and mainly amplifier and speaker buildings.

does anyone have any suppliers for cables, rca jacks / plugs, heat shrink, neutrik and switchcraft plugs etc. (mainly interconnect diy)

I'm asking about Canada because American suppliers end up shipping more expensive, brokerage and we have a 30% premium on our dollar exchange rate.

thanks!

oh btw. does anyone know solen's shipping rates? I couldn't find them.

Use Digikey for the heatshrink and Lee's or Main Electronics ( http://www.mainelectronics.com ) for connectors.

RP Electronics in Burnaby ( http://www.rpelectronics.com ) has a great surplus section if you can make it out there (not always on their site)

Princess Auto also carries RCA plugs and has great deals on cable sometimes.

Cheers!

Are you sure about Mouser? I stay away from them, they only ship by courier and not USPS AFAIK. It may allow you to check off USPS during the checkout but I think they ignore that when they process the order and see that it's to Canada.

Madisound can actually beat Solen's delivered price on many items; you should actually get quotes from both.

For your other items, I either buy those at digikey.ca or locally in Calgary at Active (on 32nd Ave. and 19th St. NE) and MRO (12th St. and 34th Ave. NE IIRC). MRO is more oriented towards techs and HAMs but they have stuff that's great for audio. They have these nice RCA jacks that fall nicely in between pricey exotica and cheap tin that I haven't found elsewhere.

yeah i just reread my first post and realized somehow it didn't send my full post. mouser and digikey... anyways yes I do go to MRO alot! but which RCA jacks are you talking about? I haven't seen anything but those really cheap black plastic ones... I don't like active much, those people there treat you like dirt.. haha. if you can show me a pic or a part number for the RCA at MRO i'll be over there next day =P

I do most of my DIY shopping at:

Digi-key.ca
Solen (sale items only, their prices are high otherwise)

RP Electronics (are okay, but they belong to this purchasing cartel that specializes in cheapo/generic crap (NTE and the likes) brands. And their surplus stuff has become rare and REALLY overpriced in the past 10 years.)

Active Components. http://www.active123.com (same cavaet as RPE, no surplus though).

Madisound
Parts Express
eBay (cavaet emptor) great for caps and resistors, but be afraid of transistors and anything else fakable. Want to buy some MJ21194's? :devilr:

Oh, ApexJr.com is pretty good.

Mouser now has 'flat rate' courier shipping which seems to avoid the problem of brokerage fees. It is about $20 though, so you want to make it worthwhile by having a sizable order.
Digikey.ca (you have to use the .ca site to get the good shipping) is a better deal with $10 flat rate shipping- quick and no brokerage hassles.
These may not be the current rates, as I haven't ordered anything from either of these for a few months.

Allied has a Cdn operation but I haven't bought much from them. My only order-last year- had some Neutrik jacks which came with the wrong ferrules and washers.

More guitar amp oriented, but with good service to me in Canada-
http://www.hoffmanamps.com/
http://musicalpowersupplies.com/index.html - transformers, some usable for budget hifi projects

For caps and resistors (nothing fancy- mostly higher voltage stuff for tube amps) & heatshrink, I've had excellent service from
http://www.justradios.com/ . Small family operation based in TO.

Cheers
John
