I am certainly not one to advise, but this is the one I am using,
http://www.microchip.com/stellent/id...cName=en023805 PICkit2 Programmer, starter kit. I had to start somewhere. Visit www.microchip.com |

For PIC's have you had a look at JAL?
I have played with it a little, it's open source software and it's editor will compile to your programmer http://www.voti.nl/jal/index_1.html This is a good book to get you started. It's basicly a pascal based programming language. There are includes published for the most commonly used harware that you can patch in to your program and save you time. Ie if you want to use a display, you can write "include HD4780" and all the code from the include file will be compiled. You can write simple programs in very few lines. I have not sat down with it for a while, other projects sort of took over, but i liked the easy to read language and the open source nature of the package.

Mooly, you can also use MPLAB IDE with the PICkit 2 programmer. That is a development environment which allows you to write code, compile, and program the micro all from one piece of software.

Hi Brian,
Have the full MPLAB IDE suite installed. That is what I used to get my LED to light. Used the 16F690 MPASM files + "Linker" files and object code I think ? It worked and programmed direct to PK2 from MPLAB. It finds the PK2 and seems to know what to do. Hi justblair, I have been surrounded by library books. An Elektor PIC book recommends JAL. With the PK2 starter kit coming with all the software I went with MPLAB. There a good forum on the Microchip site too. |

The book that I referred to is published by elector, it may be the same one.
JAL is free to download, so it might be worth trying out for an evening. I looked at MPlab, but it is a low level programming language, and it just bamboozled me. I found JAL to be better. I also tried out C++ as well, JAL was a little easier to digest.

I knew this wasn't going to be easy.
I had no idea it was going to be this difficult though So much knowledge seems to be assumed. I have got an LED to flash though with the help ?? -- erm, if that's the word -- of the tutorials. Over two weeks to get an LED to flash

Hi Brian,
Two things really. First, it's something that I feel if I don't try and get into now I never will. I am hoping that that point will come where things start to click into place. Ultimately it would be nice to be able to use PIC's in various projects. Remote control etc. The electronics involved holds no fears, but this !!! So something like, http://home1.stofanet.dk/hvaba/fprc5rx/index.html although this uses a PIC not directly supported by PK2 |
