Default Adequate voltage rating for snubber for this psu?

I am building two power supplies:

12V transformer >> schottky bridge followed by RC >> -5V discrete regulator >> preamp

115V 50VA trans (.435A) >> schottky bridge followed by RC >> 70V discrete reg >> preamp

I want to insert Haggerman's RC snubber network across the secondaries *before* the schottky bridge. I have Mills MRA-5 resistors (5 watt, 200V rating) and MRA-12 resistors (12 watt, 400V rating). For the caps, I have the 715P series orange drops rated at 600V and 1600V.

I would like to use the smaller mills and orange drops on both the -5V and 70V supplies if possible. Is this doable or must I use the larger mills and orange drops on the 70V supply?

Hi,

Your voltage and power ratings are OK but your choice of resistor is not. Even so called low inductance wirewound resistors are not particularly low inductance in low values particularly, I suggest you use either Metal oxide or carbon resistors in this application.

Regards,

Rob.

Thank you Robert! In trying to discover the answer to my question myself, I reread Jim Haggerman's whitepaper on snubbers, and I noted that he recommended carbon comp resistors. I will pick some up. Thanks again.
