I am making a modular style power supply. It will have a socket for a TO-220 and will make changing voltage as easy as replacing the regulator IC.
What I am confused on is the size needed for the decoupling caps on the input and output side. I find no consistency between datasheets and plans on the net. What is the rational when choosing a capacitor size?
I plan on adding a protection diode across the input and output. Does this need to be any certain type of diode?
Currently the only components I am planning on using are the IC, two caps, and one diode. Are there any other components I could add that would increase performance? These drop in boards will just be used for general purpose projects as they come up.
Thanks,
Matt
