I'm looking to transmit audio data over a digital link and want to compress it to reduce the required bandwidth.

I'm having trouble finding either:

1. An MP3 encoder chip (or any other format), preferably all-in-one, not requiring DSP code
2. An A/D log-scale converter or one with u-law compression

I did find the MAS3587 encoder/decoder but it is a monster both in size and power draw.

I also found an analog log converter but it would be much better to have an integrated option as size is a factor as well as power draw.

Any thoughts or direction?

I use these for making mp3:
- CDex
- Audacity
- foobar2000
- Lame frontend, of course

They are all freeware.

Audacity has many great features.
You can mark select a bit of the soundtrack spectrum
and save / process this bit of sound. Or encode it into MP3.

Anyone that has not Audacity downloaded and installed.
I really can recommend to do so.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It is all FREE.

.. of course there are all sorts of Professional Paywares with all possibilities you can think of.
