Default Helping finding a potentiometer that will fit... or, stupid me.

well, I got shafted on this one ...

I've designed myself in a corner and need a specific part that I cannot seem to find state-side. Without further ado, the part in question is:

- 5K pot, linear (not too picky 1k-5k might work too)
- Bushing needs to fit in a 8mm hole (less is fine)
- Needs a bushing that is long enough to accommodate a 0.25" panel

yeah, that's about it. As crap-tastic of a pot as you can find will work. I'd rather not talk about recessing the panel or anything else to modify the panel.. just looking for a part, that seems to be unobtanium. I'm hoping that metric loving countries might have better luck?

Most pots are 9mm and up are'nt they?
Why not tap that 8mm hole to accept one of the 9mm pots screwed into the thread... ?alternatively use angle stock or U-bar to attach the pot inside and an extended shaft.

the tapping is definitely a possibility. The extended shaft is not unfortunately. Have no fears, this pot doesn't do any sort of direct audio duties...

how about?

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=family

- 5K linear
- its 6mm, so less than 8mm as per your spec.
- can be mounted in a 5/16" hole, so if possible could you drill out the 1/4" hole you specified to 5/16" and you're good to go.

and update... I found a pot that fits. Vishay/Spectrol 248-series, or mouser 594-248-1502....

now, my knob won't fit I tried wrapping it with paper, and that didn't work. Here's a pic:

Click the image to open in full size.

it's says its for a 6mm hole and has a single set screw.

The new pot shaft is 0.125" diameter and rather short.... (this is another problem with the above knob, as the set screw is right at the end and if I raise the knob a bit so it doesn't scrape the panel, then it doesn't fit so well). So, any pics of custom knobs to give me an idea of some options? There's a place in town that does custom knobs for reasonable prices, so all I need is a good idea, and a picture

since the shaft is so much smaller, it's going to wobble when turned. I think a custom knob is going to be the ticket

believe it or not, I find a local outfit that will do it for $18. It will be 1.5" in diameter, 1" deep and support the 0.125" shaft. Made from stainless with a position indicator. Here's their website:
