Hi people,
I am here asking for help. If I get the problem I have sorted I will make a good donation to this site, as I feel I could save a lot of money and hassle with just a little advice. My problem is this; I got drunk and was silly/stupid when DJing at a halloween party and broke my amp. A flash blew out and then the LEDS would come on, but no noise. I opened up the amp, a Sony TA-FB830R, and saw what I assumed to be a transistor had blown. I looked to the other side of the PCB and saw it was a J200 transistor. There was a K something and J200 on each side. Everything else looks fine. My question is if I simply replace the transistor, maybe both J200s to match them up, would the amp probably work again? Also where could I get a replacement or would somewhere like Maplins do an alternative MOS FET transistor? I'd really, really appreciate some advice |

It will probably not fix things. When devices go, they usually take others with them. What made you think that particular device blew? Do you have a voltmeter to do some basic checks?
Usually when there's a flash, it's a rail fuse, which is a pretty easy repair.

Thanks for the advice.
Well one of the legs has blown off the mosfet so I know that's gone. I was going to try to replace it but it seems beyond my means to find a replacement. Everything else looks fine... I don't really know what to do? Maybe I could get a replacement board from Sony? I left my wife the volt meter when I left her and haven't replaced it yet |

you should learn not to refer to your ex wife as it.
Else you risk losing the replacement as well. The FETs are probably 2sj200 and 2sk1529. Can you confirm? What drivers are fitted? When you replace the fuse or fuses, use a mains light bulb in line with the mains Live feed to the amp to allow a safe start up without blowing up any more parts. If the light bulb lights you still have problems.

LOL.
Yes I believe those FETs are the ones. Erm...I don't know what drivers are? What are they? I don't quite understand the lightbulb thing, sorry. The amp powers up but no noise comes out of the speakers or headphone socket. I am hoping if I just replace the FETs (should I do all of them?) the amp will start to make noise again. The only thing that looks blown is the 2SJ200 on the right hand side, so hopefully just replacing that will do the trick? Cheers for the tips. |
