Hey guys I am having a bit of trouble making my noise sniffer. I am having a lot of ignition noise in my CB radio antenna system so i want to pin point the source.
I am making it out of a Sony Walkman. I get how it works, i just don't know what to solder to what prongs on the reader head. Here is how to generally do it: 1.) Get an old AM/FM/Tape Walkman 2.) Remove the tape head inside(unsolder it). Some say solder it to the tape head, some say remove it and solder the extension wire to the connections but im not sure what connections. I heard there area few 3.) Extend the tape head connections with an antenna/shielded wire (some say shielded antenna wire and some instructions don’t say). 4.) Strip 1inch off the end of the extended wire, this acts as the 'microphone' for the noise. 5.) Press "play" on the Walkman tape part and the extended wire will pick up the radiated noise. The louder the noise is in the walkman headphones, the closer u are to the noise source. Some instructions have suggested using shielded wire as the extended wire but if its shielded what type of shielded wire? Also if it has a shield do i have to solder that to something also? Here are some pictures, the reader head prongs are numbered in case anyone can tell me exactly what to solder to what: Any help is greatly appreciated! ![]() This one is the top view taken off. It looks like "1, 4 and 5" are all connected on the same circuit path as you might be able to tell. ![]()

I don't know for sure but if I had to guess it looks like 2 and 3 are the tape head connections and 1,4,5 are connected to ground which surrounds the signal traces to shield them.
