I am building Anthony Holton's 400 watt symmetrical amp and it calls for bc546 556 and bd139 (I guess these are the small transistors). Digikey doesn't have them. Does digikey have anything that would be a drop in replacement? I found some stuff at Mouser, but I'm not sure its its correct, bc546B bc556, and BD139 ships in 14 days. I'd rather use digikey. Any ideas?

If what you have found is what you typed above , it seems right. All those transistors are widely used. BC series have an A or a B or a C depending on the current gain. No letter is the least gain. In most cases any type would do except when high gain is a must by design. BD139 is a higher power device (than BC5xx series) in a TO126 case I think. You can go ahead and buy these from Mouser. I do not think you can go wrong. Cheers.

You might read this thread
replacements digikey has 2sc4793/2sa1837 for bd139/140 and 2n3904/3906 might work for bc546/556. mpsa06/56 for bc546/556 has also been used. There are lots of threads with other options. I don't think digikey has the following (just for more options). I also use partsexpress.com matelectronics.com and i-mcm.com to get transistors. ESP http://www.sound.westhost.com/ uses MJE340/350 to replace BD139/140. I've also gotten MPS8099/MPS8599 and MPS8098/MPS8598 from ebay that seem to work in place of BC546/556

Thanks. I got the extra stuff from Newark instead. Don't know why. Just did. I tried partsexpress (who is my favorite actually) but they only seemed to ahve the MJE340/350's...so I got those from them. Newark was fine too though.
Thanks for posting though, now i have a reference in case I need it. ![]() -Matthew K. Olson |
