Default how do I install an LED

I am putting some finishing touches on my amp build, and I want to put an LED on the front panel when it is powered on. How do I wire it into the switch? I've never messed with one, so is it just inline with the power? or do they need resistance?

thanks

that definately helps, but im still not sure how to do it with a switch.

I am not using a bread board for this part, this will be point to point wiring.

sorry for my ignorance.

from what i gather, a 2.2k resistor wired in line from the power will have the LED on all the time. Now how do I get it to come on and off with the switch.

thanks for the help

Hi,
you can wire the LED + resistor across the main smoothing caps.
As the caps charge up the LED lights and then brightens, no switch needed.
At switch off the LED will dim and eventually go out.
This LED current also discharges the smoothing caps (down to about 1.6V) after switch off.

Do you need help in figuring the size of the resistor? What is your power supply voltage?
