I found a box of the VN0109 lying around at my workplace. They are the metal case type with gold pins. They N channel FET , but can anyone advise what can i do to make good use of them ie. in what applications? Or what other parts can they be cross-referenced to?

from the datasheet:
Applications - Motor controls - Converters - Amplifiers - Switches - Power supply circuits - Drivers (relays, hammers, solenoids, lamps, memories, displays, bipolar transistors, etc.) This mosfet is a low voltage, high drain-source resistance, very low current device.... you can use it in low power application only
