There was a recent Nuts n Volts article "Build the JCAN" -- a device to measure resistor noise -- hmmmm, I wondered whether you can measure noise out to 100kHz or so with a high quality hand-held DVM.
The Fluke 8920 and HP 3403 use a thermopile, the Boonton and Tektronix AA501 use the AD536 Log-AntiLog converter. I used a Genrad 1381 random noise generator with 2kHz, 5kHz and 50kHz bandwidth. The answer is:

The little bit of variability amongst the true, true RMS meters relates more to the bandpass filters in the GR1381 -- this is, after all, a circa 1968 noise generator.
