Default Circuit to create a 2second pulse at random internals

I'm struggling . I need to make a simple pulse generator that will give me a 2second output (or thereabouts) randomly spaced with intervals of something in the region of 10 to 80seconds.
I have searched online and found surprisingly little. It doesn't have to be truely random so I was thinking about using a display driver and manipulating it such that the different combinations of its outputs equate to ten different time periods, this was getting a little more complicated than I had hoped though.

I have since found a product on the market which could easily be adapted to my use and it's very simple using only one IC. It is called an "annoy-a-tron" http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/8c52/
I have been trying to identify the IC however those who I have found with one say there is no identification on it. So it's back to the drawing board but with that bugging knowledge there is a chip out there that does what I want...

Does anyone have any ideas how I could do it or better still know of a single chip solution?

Much appreciated

Any 6 or 8 pin microcontroller could be programmed for what you want to do, or are you looking for something that doesn't involve a microcontroller?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have to be honest that I hadn't even thought about using a microcontroller, using one would explain all of my observations .
I'll give it a whirl and keep this thread updated with my progress.

Cheers!

among other things, you can set up a one shot (555) with an DAC made of some resistors and a shift register where the input is the xor of two of the bits in the shift register. this creates a pseudo random number sequence where the statistical distribution is similar to random, but the pattern is predicable. as an input to the 555, it can be used to change the amount of time between pulses.

thats 3 chips though.
