Default Help with IRFP240 transistor replacement

My Arcam Alpha 9 is dead and I need to replace 2 pairs of output transistors IRFP240, which are I believe are from Fairchild Semi.

My other amp, a Sim Audio, have also damaged its transitors and I have ordered 5 pairs of MJL21193/94 from On-Semi as samples.

Living in a remote country, I'm having problems buying the IRFP240.

My questions are:
(a) Can I use the MJL21193/94 instead of the IRFP240

(b) Is a combination of 2 pairs of IRFP240/IRFP9240 better than 2 pairs of IRFP240?

(c) Is the IRFP240 sold by International Rectifier an alternative to IRFP240 from Fairchild?

(d) Are there any better sounding alternatives to the IRFP240?
Many thanks

sudesh,

a) No, MJL21193/94 are bipolar transistors and IRFP240 is a mosfet.

b) I understand that you need these for the Arcam.
Always replace with original parts, same type numbers is best.
If two pairs of IRFP240 are in there, don't replace with 240 and 9240's. You will mix N-channel with P-channel mosfets where only N-channel is used.

c) Yes.

d) I would say it depends on the application they are used in. If the amp is designed to work with 240's it most likely will work best with them. The sound of an amp depends on a lot more than the output transistors.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your reply. Any idea where in Europe I can get these (IRFP240)? I need 3 pairs.

I have an address in Europe where the goods can be posted to.

thanks
sudesh
