Hi,
the 12" eminence should go into a well stuffed sealed box for a monitoring floor wedge, internal volume 1 cuft or slightly more. Dual cone 10" may be all that is needed but hard to come by. Budget should include all cabinet hardware, its not cheap. 10" Driver + tweeter is possible but much more complicated. |

Over the past decade many companies have been selling plastic boxes that claim to do both, I have seen several bands that use the same speakers for front of house and as the stage monitors. EV and the countless clones ect, they all feature constant directivity horns and bass from 40hz to 60hz, so even the Big Boys dont know what they are doing. Or is it that they have recognised that feedback supresers are now affordable and that the bass can be reduced by EQ or by the mixer ect if its a problem. There is an arguement that this would be better as you on stage would actually hear the sound exactly as the audience would. One of the first speakers that I ever made was a stage monitor, 12 inch with pizzo horn, It was shaped as a wedge so could work on stage or was mounted on the side walls either side of a 50ft stage. Bands and live musicals performed there. Personally I agree that extended bass can get in the way so a sealed box is a good idea. The components that I suggested to you in an earlier post feature a Selenium horn with 60 x 40 coverage to minimise feedback ect and are similar in size and performance to the commercial speakers mentioned above 200 w RMS Selenium even say on the Web site that all these components are designed for the purpose that you mentioned "stage monitoring" |

I would probably use the co-axial 8" drivers by volt in their Pro-PA range, in small wedge boxes if it was me, but they may be too pricy in the states.

Driver and CD horn would work well, but are not needed for this application, so why complicate things. Yes, you could go with a smaller box, I was just think of something big enough to pose on.

I remember in the eighties making some 45deg wedge boxes just big enough for a 12" McKenzie. We didn't know anything about box volume, porting, stuffing or filters. They worked fine.
If I were making them now I would change that angle to make them 30/40deg (flipover) and put a high pass as high as 100hz. On stage you are looking for information rather than sound quality so guitar and vocals for pitch. More bass I don't need. There's enough coming off the back wall! |

You might check out the wedgehorns. Look to be about the right combination of price and performance. They'll take some skill to build, but nothing nightmarish I think. Supposedly good plans too. The W10s can be built for something like $150 a pop, and the smaller versions are even cheaper. They get loud too. http://www.billfitzmaurice.com P. |
