Hmmmm...
Find a pair of speakers, hook them up to your computer.
Download winISD Pro, and click on to the Signal Generator.
Set it to 8kHz, turn the volume to somewhere acceptable (while its playing through both speakers) and then move your head around a bit.
Notice how the volume changes as you move around.
You'll get something similar because of the two PA speakers near each other - this is a demonstration of interference.
Now go back to your speaker + computer set-up.
Set the computer to mono audio, put the speakers right next to each other, then play some music.
Walk around, and focus on listening to the treble.
You'll probably find it changes a little as you move. This will be the effect on music of having two sources radiating the same sound.
Because music is so complex (made up of lots and lots of different frequencies), the effect of each frequency changing amplitude by a different amount makes the effect of interference fairly small.
To expand: you get different amounts of cancellation at each frequency according to the frequency itself, and your listening position.
As you move, the level of some frequencies will increase, while others decrease.
The net result is a change in sound, but not a massive one - you'll still be able to hear everything clearly (as you did with the two computer speakers next to each other).

Its starting to sound like an interesting effect. would it really be that big a deal- we already struggle with the room sound cos its almost like a cube. If we can afford to keep the speakers then we should try this set-up and see if it just about works? (we have some decent monitors and a smaller amp for mixing down). what do others think?
