Default Outdoor PA -- What type of Speakers ?

I help out at the local hospital radio.

They have a converted ambulance which is used at events to promote the radio station.

A problem I have noticed is a lack of projection.
The PA is loud enough close to but it cannot really be heard more than a few tens of yards away, certainly not at 100yds.

The speakers used are what I would call "disco-type" Carlsboro with a 15" bass bin.

Any suggestions on how to get a bit more projection without too much harshness ??

I use horns for the mids and highs and place them up high over people's heads because high frequencies get absorbed by bodies, bass not so much.

A bit of both, maybe, to keep the cost down.

Have a look on Craigslist. Sometimes the deals stare you in the face.

I say turn the ambulance into a subwoofer and run the horns off of the roof on a pole. That and it makes a heck of a ride to the ER!
