As a general rule electric guitar is always mic'ed but bass could be either or a mixture of both.
PS: Many bass guitars have active electronics built in powered by a 9v battery. A friend of mine is a bass player and frequently does not bother bringing his amp to to a gig. He just plugs his bass straight into a di box.
