Need a free MIDI synth or better (maybe MP3)

I am very interested in making my own remixes of game music as can be found on HTTP://www.ocremix.org and I need a synthesizer to do it with. Can you use Audacity? I have tried and it comes up with "cannot open sound device" andI havent found a way to create or modify MIDI's with it. Any suggestions?
