Love the violin but like the saxophone it must be played well and recorded well. A skilled player can get everything from gentle wafting (see Beethovan Violin Concerto in D) or harsh and in your face (stravinski type stuff). Also note that like many instruments you would do well not to stand too close. The instrument needs room to blend with itself.
Bowed strings have a soft attack and release. This is not bad but rather an intrinsic value that the composer must use well. If plucked it has a hard attack. Just what it is. Now I am not a big fan of guitars, ukes and the like but even those have a place if used to good effect. mike |
