Of course the other alternative is that the world may be full of dodgy violinists. Saxaphones are another instrument that evokes mixed feelings. Vaughan Williams wrote a saxaphone section for one of his works and noted that the pieces had to be scored properly and that they (the saxaphones) weren't going to be allowed "to sound like demented cats" . Much to be said for that policy I think.

I couldn't disagree more. I love the violin...solo violin can be absolutely mesmerizing (Scherezade) and the mass violins can be incredibly uplifting (perhaps Beethoven's 9th Symphony).

Speaking of baba Baba O'Riley, I got to hear the original recording of that man playing that old irish jig. Very cool.
Who's next is an amazing album to say the least.

Just to move the dabate on a little I hope you have all seen the Gary Larsen cartoon the illustrates the difference between heaven and hell. In one section St. Peter is welcoming people at the Pearly Gates with the cheerful greeting, "Welcome to heaven...here is your harp" while in the next frame his opposite number is saying to the rather discouraged line of people, "Welcome to hell.....here is your piano accordian....!"

Are you actually listening to young artists playing the violin? Most of them couldn't even play the fiddle correctly!

Get some titles by David Oistrakh (not his son Igor), Nathan Milstein, and Mischa Elman and you will be hooked forever!

$1700 fon an LP? A Columbia classical LP?! What drives this? Most every Columbia classical in my collection is a multi-mic disaster and new releases of old labels destroyed the market for antique vinyl as I understand it. Perfomance?
