(BANG) - Radiohead's 'OK Computer' has been voted the greatest album of all time.
The British band was awarded the prestigious title after topping a poll by British TV station Channel Four to find music fans' favourite records.
Radiohead, fronted by Tom Yorke, beat off stiff competition from a host of critically acclaimed artists including The Beatles, U2, Queen and Nirvana to claim the top spot.
The 1997 album, which was a worldwide hit, was closely followed by U2's 'The Joshua Tree' and Nirvana's 'Nevermind'.
Scandal-hit Michael Jackson's pop masterpiece 'Thriller' - which spawned an incredible seven hit singles - was voted into fourth position.
Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' came fifth, Oasis' debut album 'Definitely Maybe' sixth, while The Beatles' 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and 'Revolver' came seventh and tenth respectively making them the only band to have two entries in the top ten.
Radiohead's victory was applauded by a whole host of musicians including REM singer Michael Stipe who described the album as a "classic, brilliant record."
The poll quizzed half a million people to find their favourite records. The results were broadcast on television last night (17.04.05).

Pretty good IMO.
The thing about this kind of result is that it's naturally skewed:
There may be limited nominations.
The existance of the competition may not be known to people who don't watch the particular TV channel.
The votes will come exclusively from those who don't mind paying for a premium rate call to vote. --not me--
But hey, nothings perfect

Hilarious. Most of these lists are designed to get people talking about the listmaker. This one is apparently no exception. Nice to know that Radiohead is more important than Miles Davis. And that there has not been a classical recording as important as Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Hey, where's Starland Vocal band?

No, IMHO this is in all fairness a bit better than most of the fluff lists out there. This one is at least diverse enough that it doesn't just immediately come out of the station's own playlist like most others do. You can make fun of the order but there are some good leads on what to buy on the next trip to the music store.

It's interesting that the Rolling Stones don't show up until 35th and Dylan at 55th. These polls are usually biased towards opinions of the younger set. Sort of reminds me of the Internet Movie Database top 250 films. Most of the great ones are in there but the top ten are dominated by Lord of the Rings serial.

SY said:It might be fun to compile an anti-list. Nothing newer than 20 years old (so anything on the list has stood at least a small test of time). Extra points for dead guys.
This is why I prefer yearly lists. I either already own or have heard enough of just about anything that ever makes these Top 100 albums lists - the pop oriented ones anyway.
I don't know if I would put OK Computer at the top of the list considering the influences from which they were/are able to draw. For that reason I would tend to say that it would have to be a landmark album from the late sixties or seventies that combines creative songwriting and interesting recording techniques.
Ok Computer is imho the best album of the last twenty years hands down. Nothing blends that kind of creativity and artistry with a certain appeal to the masses. It's simply phenomenal. I will agree with the statement that it isn't "easy" to listen to, well the first time is more difficult, but that has never been one of my criteria for truly great music.

Man, I only own 37 of those. And they're not all the ones you're "supposed to" own... no Floyd, no Beatles, no Radiohead....
Some odd right artist, wrong album picks though:
For Neil Young, it should be Harvest, not After The Goldrush.
Massive Attack Protection not Blue Lines.
Yes these best album of all time polls are always skewed to the latest stuff. Because, if you don't still listen to older albums, then those aren't fresh in your head when someone asks you to pick a favorite. Also, if you're a youngster, then you probably don't know any oldies.

Well, actually:
more an example of the taste of the masses...
SY just wants it to be 20 years out so we fogies can have an opinion.
He's correct though- Our opinions are right!
