Indeed, his pop/country popularity may have been seen by many as the depth of his talent - huge oversight - he was one of the more accomplished session artists of his era.
I have found memories of family viewing of his Smother's Brothers performances, and playing with banjo picker extraordinaire (at least for us mainstream yokels) John Hartford on his own TV series. "Gentle on my Mind" and "By the time I get to Phoenix" were probably the first tunes to open my young punk eyes and ears to a world beyond the rock / psychedelic explosion of the day that wasn't my mom's Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
