There is a brilliant live album by Alison Moyet, which is the second CD of her "Singles" collection. It is a raw live recording taken straight from the desk with no over dubs and consequently has a fantastic immediacy and intimacy. The sound quality is excellent.
You will not be disappointed.

Check out Dean Peer's album Ucross; particularly the track Earth School.

It's solo bass guitar and is very punchy and dynamic.

Just found this thread ... the sound track CD for "Moulin Rouge!" has tremendous dynamic swings - most systems would be totally incapable of playing this without collapsing into a garbled mess, if the volume was set at anything like a reasonable level ...

A dynamic recording is quite the opposite to 'in yer face' to me. One of the best I've found is Decca's 'La Traviata' with Joan Sutherland and Carlo Bergonzi. Terrific jump factor.

The "Moulin Rouge!" is both: it uses modern, extremely heavily processed music, mixed in with the recording of 'normal' sounds, singing - where the average sound level would easily swing by, say, 40dB, or so - over a few minutes ..
