i've heard no Michael Nesmith solo work but am curious. What would you recommend as an introductory disc?
Allow me to begin by saying his solo work is mostly country-rock. I even make a distinction between "country" and "western," and some of this stuff is definitely western. My recommendation, though, would be either Loose Salute or Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash as a good place to begin.
I have his first six post-Monkee albums as "two-fers" on 3 CDs. I'm not sure if they are still available that way.

Read this entry by one Bob McCune in response to the Jones obit. Brief but superbly written.

Our mixers were all 1/2 imported, I remember they frowned on all parts.

It should be remembered that at the time, Hendrix was not yet the superstar he became.

I remember about that time reading an ad in the local paper advertising the apearance of a "great, new guitarist" at a local bar in the Newburgh, NY area for one night only.
Not many heard of him but I will never forget the advertisment and the name, regretting that I did not go to see him. It was Jimi Hendrix!

Its not well known but Davy Jones appeared on the Ed Sullivan show that introduced The Beatles to America. He played "The Artful Dodger" with a stage production of the musical "Oliver" on the very first historic appearance of The Beatles. That's what made him audition for The Monkees, he saw the reaction The Beatles were getting from girls in the audiance.

"I couldn't believe that Davey Jones from the Monkees died.

But then I saw his face.... now I'm a bereaver."
