Most annoying song you know

Having tried to write a song or two in the past I'm slow to jump to criticism. On the other hand at least I had the good taste to know when they just didn't stand up in an era that contained The Beatles, Dylan, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and many other wonderful songwriters.

It disappoints me when I hear what I consider 'churn', or 'new for the sake of new'. A lot of people out there writing songs should just not bother to record them. That's what the wastepaper bin is for.

There is no place in music for fashion in my book. Unfortunately there is a huge amount of material which I am likely to encounter either in public places or in the broadcast media which I find irritating to a greater or lesser degree.

Lily Allen has been guilty of authoring some dismal little dirges in the recent past, I don't care how 'witty' the lyrics may be, that kind of stuff isn't going to age gracefully.

Gangster 'music', and other hate and racist and homophobia inspired self-aggrandisement is frequently on offer on the radio.

"I'm so good 'cause I got a big dick I'll come round and **** you while your (white) old man's at work... I'll pop a cap in his gay *** if he don't like it... you can depend on being one of a string of women I abuse..."

What am I supposed to think when I hear this stuff? I'm a white anglo-saxon intellectual doing my level best not to react out of my received social prejudices. What I think is, 'You 4ssholes are making money, yeah. Proud of yourselves?' Did I mention Protestant?

In the recent past, the abysmal Spice Girls and a bit further back, the immoral Madonna piggybacking her moronic and calculatedly offensive advertising slogans on her pornographic videos. What a weird child-acquisitive hag she turned into! People said Jacko was weird but it's nothing like the apparent consciencelessness she displays. Be careful what you wish for Kyle, it may come true.

Unfortunately Mark Knopfler, for all his undoubted talent, was no songwriter. The most profound thing he said was 'We are the Sultans of Swing'.

Anyway, thankfully there has been a recent renaissance in songwriting, David Gray, Maroon 5, Snow Patrol, I don't always agree with the production values, but there are some timeless songs in there...

hhhhhmmmm a little crotchetty today aren't we Mr W?

Would you like to throw a "Bah, Humbug!" in there for good measure?

Spice Girls are no more or less offensive than the Bay City Rollers, and both exemplify the Pop as Fashion idea for their times. Churn as you put it has always existed in music - Amercan producers excelledat it and SAW turned it into an art form 25 years ago.

Madonna, while being tonally challenged, produced much of her best work in her earlier period and that will stand for quite some time. Not that I think her impressive in any way, but Madonna's lifestyle seems tame, almost puritanical, by comparison to the Glimmer twins.

Gangsta rap is no more than Punk posturing revisited. And take a listen to Goats Head Soup and Their Satanic Majesties for some thouroughly misoginistic performances from the masters you hail.

Maroon 5?????? Have you no self respect? lol

Oh and soz , but Madonna is cool !! Her mistake is being determined , ambitious , out spoken and single minded , attributes not universally admired by men in women. I don't like much pop music but Mads is at least creative and well produced.

You think I don't like her because she's determined, ambitious, out spoken and single minded? (BTW, it's comma, space or comma, space, space not space , comma , space. Ask anybody...)

No, I don't like her because she's a selfish, cold, exploitative individual who think's it's OK to buy other people's children (???) and who has managed to exert sufficient influence, almost certainly as a result of her wealth, to evade restraint by national or international authority. Her underlying attitude has always been there there for all to see in her output. She's got no principles. She's a seriously nasty piece of work, probably a clinical psychopath.

Do you think anybody, anywhere, ever listened to a Madonna track and cried tears of anything other than frustration and bitterness?

'Madonna's lifestyle seems tame, almost puritanical,' - yeah, compared to who? Hitler? 'Cause she works out and eats nothing? Get real aardvark... and don't get me started on the BCRs, who were not exactly favourites of mine but none of whose output or subsequent behaviour could be really described as malevolent.

Congratulations to all her fans who made this possible.

I'm saving the humbugs 'till closer to Christmas.
