It's not a matter of the first name ; most of the people we know from the past are known from their 'nick' , which is often the place where they came from .
I refer to many artists such as Giotto ( the man known as the one who could make a perfect circle freehand ) .

Of course ! Also Giotto was born in a village north to Florence ( Vinci is West ),and it's not the name of the town , but a diminutive of the name ( maybe Ambrogio ).
Michelangelo was born in Caprese Michelangelo
Maybe it was later dedicated to him

(Michelangelo Merisi da) Caravaggio was born in Milan but the family moved to Caravaggio when little Michelangelo was 5 years old.
His father was the administrator and architect of the Marchese of (di?) Caravaggio.

That's another Michelangelo ! He didn't paint the Sistina Chapel; indeed , he took the name from the town he came from .

Then there is Canaletto ('little canal') who came from… wait for it… Venice.

That said his father, also a painter, was named Bernardo Canal.
