I bought a CD a couple days ago that changed my life a bit. Portishead- Roseland NYC. Its a live album recorded in 1997 I believe. Iv'e enjoyed their music for quite some time now. If you haven't checked them out then I would suggest doing so. The album "Dummy" in particular is wonderful, and her voice is absolutely addicting.
There was a song called "Roads" on Dummy that I was particularly fond of. I was exited when I saw that the live album had that track. I popped the CD in my home rig, and listened to it till track 9. All of it was very good, but "Roads" was just at a completely different level. I have never heard a female artist put so much emotion and soul into a song, and I am not embarrassed to say that it made me emotional just listening to it. Loreena Mckennitt comes very close to this level as well.
So now I am on the hunt for similar albums, live or otherwise, with this quality. Where the artist (preferably female, I am a sucker for them) puts everything into a song or album.
Anyone experience this before? Please share your thoughts!

Jacques Brel does it for me - beaucoup emotion in every song. Giving it his all. Nuts.
But not female. And if you don't understand French then it probably won't do it for you.
I remember a guy on the street in Leningrad. Short, stocky guy with a buzz cut, acoustic guitar and huge voice just belting them out. Didn't need much Russian to catch the emotion and angst in that - crickey! Like a Russian prize fighter version of Brel - taken up a notch. Wish I'd had a mic.
As for a different sort of emotion, how about Julie London? Sultry and sexy, if that's your thing.

If you want to hear something impossibly beautiful, try Renee Fleming singing (pleading!) O mio babbino caro from Gianni Schicchi and Un bel di from Madame Butterfly. Both are by Puccini. You could probably check them out from your local library.
In a Brazilian vein, try Astrud Gilberto singing Corcovado.

I've been listening to all of Cat Power recordings ( Chan Marshall) esp her earlier things lately ( minimal lo-fi recording ) and is really raw emotional stuff in the vein of Kurt Cobain's unplugged with a voice similar to Fiest. Check out her album called "The Greatest" for more mainstream songs and production.
This performance from French TV is so sublime and makes the small hairs stand up when she shouts out the chorus at 1:50 and again at 3:30. I can't seem watch it too many times.

I am pretty much open to any genre and male or female. I only said female because it seems their music seems to have this quality at a much higher occurrence than men. Most guys are to afraid of looking like softies these days

A really good way as was mentioned before can be sourced from films like "Juno" to "Garden State".
Another way is start with a singer or group that you like and then do your own research by reading reviews or interviews to what...
1) other artists songs they may cover
2) other artists they cite as influences
3) other artists whom they have toured with
4) others on the same record label
5) past groups they may have come from previously
Then use google search on amazon or even blogs and other music sites for actual mp3s to sample for your tastes/likings.
Take an example
Zero7 remixed a song called "Up with People" from a obscure group called Lambchop and then Sia Fuller a singer who had toured with Zero7 in the past also performed the song on her own.
