There are so many different sub-categories.
My current favourites: Dimmu-borgir, Amorphis and Summoning
But I don't think they'll be considered 'classics' 30 years on.

I agree, there are so many different sub-genres of metal that it's really an impossible question to answer. It also depends on what your classification of metal is. I personally like the more classic bands, such as Judas Priest, iron Maiden, and Megadeth, but I like a lot of the newer stuff as well.

Pantera by far.

Best tracks in descending order:

Throes of rejection
Hard lines, sunken cheeks
Shedding skin
5 minutes alone
I'm broken
Drag the waters

Cheers,
Glen

Gojira. Listen to "The Link" I think their drummer may have 3 arms!

And of course, since no one else has mentioned it yet, Opeth.

The newest Iron Maiden album (Matter of Life and Death) is very well recorded. Dynamics of up to 10-15db.
