this isnt a thread for the anthems of today. lets see how many of you older guys out there were bit by the rave bug when you were young, and how many of you young guys are good enough at research to find and enjoy what they played way back when... so who enjoys the old techno house and trance of the early 90s? I really love the releases world vol1 - world vol3, "frequensize" by the kosmok komando, anything by CJ bolland, joey beltram... dave clarke... also the numerous booming slightly distorted four to the floor warehouse party stuff, the deep ethereal inner city sounding stuff... anyone else got a soft spot for this?
I was into the house stuff big style for a while. Love Boutique in Glasgow's Arches night club.... The DJ was god, the women were scantily clad, the music went through you.

Ahh fond memories. The music though didn't age very well IMHO. It made more sense through much inhibited senses

Listen to Itch-e and Scratch-e's ambient stiff on the rest of the album sweetness and light came from. theres a heap of detail in there.
Quench, sequenchial album, is a similar feel.
Early Prodigy is suprisingly complicated if you can listen past the cheesiness.
For some ambient jungle I still give the Artcore complications a spin regularly. There is a lot of great music on the REACT label from around 1995. The dark side, hardcore drum and bass style compilation had that here's johnny track on it, not one of my favourites, on CD in 1993, WHo knows when it was released on vinyl, probably about 1991. Then got thrashed on commercial radio in 1997.

Clubs! They went out the window, warehouse in the middle of nowhere to events by the likes of Fantazia, Helter-Skelter etc. All the comercial stuff was just anthems, where what was really going on was way out there. CDs were'nt avaiable, the 12" vynil was nice, but audio cassette! Who had DR S Gaschet in '92? Druid? EllisDee? Christ I can only remember the good ones.
I followed all the way up to Scott Brown and Sharkey, the Bonkers stuff. Got to number 11 and from there on it got repetitive. I now listen to a lot of Geman stuff from Fresh FM, downloaded of course.
But, they were the days. Even Radio 1 would play some good events. Remember Tribal Gathering? Now Global Gathering, someone had an idea to move the dance scene to Ibiza and the music got worse. The Beer Monkeys always spoilt everything, still do, Alchahol, demon of most things from beating your wife to killing tots on the road, yet thos on happy pills were getting grief left right and centre. Every teen on the news who died of an E, and only took one, seemed to hide the fact that they didn't have a clue! Did you see news of a 30 year old who died? No, the teens were'nt educated. They'd mix beer and vodka with pills and their bodies couldn't deal with it. You pop an E and drink water, plenty of it. Thats why Ravers always had bottles of water, all that high BPM dancing and excellerated heart rates whilst tripping ya tits off, your boy needs to stay hydrated.

Yes, I wasn't there. But had many friends who did. I can't dance to save my life, music is to be listened to for me. I was always asked to copy this cassette, clean up that recording. I had one which had music in the left channel and MC with faint music in the right. I would use a Karaoke deck to mix everything even, and hope that some stereo remained. All from my bed sit.

I adore early techno, though I started listening to it aged about 12 and couldn't go to any of these mystical events, though fortunately the 1994 CJB didn't ruin my life either.
I'm not so into happy hardcore/gabba/jungle et al, more the darker more minimalist stuff from '92 and earlier, The Prodigy, Altern8, Joey Beltram, T99, Praga Kahn, etc.

I half agree. When you were there and for some time afterwards you know tracks only by descriptions like 'that one with the really analoguey bit where everybody used to go mad' then years later you buy a CD and find out that it had some ridiculous name like 'I take lots of pills' by 'Mr mad bassline and the acid crew'

You can't buy decent rave music, the Dj's were lucky to be able to put most of their sessions on DAT. If only someone would burn these to disk. Alternate did a CD mix, 2cd's with about 4 decent tracks, the rest commercial crap, or Handbag as we used to call it.

I picked up a bunch of cassette mixtapes from market stalls when I was in the UK around 1995. Some are labelled as to the actual club night (Hard Times, Fantazia double packs) and claim to have been recorded from the original DAT, others have nothing but the mispelled DJ's name on it.
There's a few tapes I made of a college radio station show from around 1989 to '90, with stuff like Gino Latino, Westbam, Silver Bullet, Deskee - tracks I'm still watching out for on CD and vinyl.
William Orbit's Strange Cargo is good, and he was also in Bassomatic. Saw Orbital live at the Langley Drive-in, the Orb at Graceland in Vancouver.
Eat Static is a spin-off of Ozric Tentacles who are also worth a listen.
This time of year, and in particular this weekend is a good time to sit outside at night with the KLF's "Chill Out" playing while you sip a beverage and watch for shooting stars.
