Speaker choice: Proacs response 2.5 vs Eros vs Thor

Hi all

I'm (still) looking for very good diy speakers, and (still) don't know wich to choose :bawling:

What I want:

Really good sounding DIY speakers
Floorstanders
based on a well known design, with plans for cabinets, crossivers and all

What I don't want:

a horn
a cabined with as many sides as a diamond, like an ariel or a watt puppy
to design them myself (choose the drivers, calculate the volumes, the xo)

What isn't important:
efficiency (I don't listen loud)
2, 2.5 or 3 ways

The most important thing is sound quality 🙂

I've read many threads about speakers, and heard many good things about the proac response 2.5 clones, the www.speakerbuikder.net 's eros, and also some things about the thor

So, I thing I'll go for one of these three, but since I can't build them all to compare, and keep the best sounding one 😀, i'll need some help to choose.
Have someone listened and compared those speakers?

Wich ones ot those would sound best?
Or is there another and choice?

Thanks

My own dilemma.

Bricolo,

I also have the same problem. I am currently leaning toward the Eros because of the performance of the Vifa woofer and Scan Speak tweeter that are used in that speaker. Also Wayne at speakerbuilder.net seems to always be helpful and supportive of all his designs. This is obvious considering his redesign of the crossover for the Eros II. The 2.5 clones seem to be very popular here and are a proven design commercially.

I have though, just started investigating the possibility of building the Thor. I believe that BrianGT chronicled the building of a set and even demonstrated them at a DIY speaker meeting in Atlanta. See if you can get in touch with him about his impressions concerning the Thor.

Later,

Hi,
I am a newbie without much experience, but I too am facing the same question.

Earlier this year there was a review of the Thor's in audioXpress and a detailed description of their construction. The review was very positive although the construction seems quite involved. If you would like, I could scan it in and send it along.

thanks

I have not heard the Thors but I remember the Thor AudioExpress review seemed to over-state how good the bass response was on listening tests. I recall a discussion on Madisound forum about people complaining about the lack of bass from the design despite using 2 x 7"Excels in TL.

However, midrange and treble performance should be better than the 2.5 clone.

I guess you can't have it all.

Howabout a new DIY design using:

2 x SS 8535 woofers for excellent bass (70-80L);
Seas W18 Excel for open baffle for midrange;
Seas T25CF002 for treble.

Al.M

"2 x SS 8535 woofers for excellent bass (70-80L);
Seas W18 Excel for open baffle for midrange;
Seas T25CF002 for treble"

Exchange the SS to Peerles XLS, and the W18 to W22 and for the same price you have the Orioin kit, makes a LOT of sense IMO.

Bricolo,

"but I don't know the seas drivers, how goor are they compared to skan speak and vifas?"

Better in the opinion of most people with experience and knowledge.

those orions?

not cheap :/

I built the Rythm speakers using scanspeak drivers...you can read about them on the north creek music systems web site.

Mine are biamped using BOSOZ and Aleph amps...I think they sound pretty good, but can't compare them. I have been tempted by the Thor speakers as a winter project.

the problem about north creek is that they sell kits, and don't give construction notes on their site

i'm not looking for something like this

Bricolo,

all I meant was for the "kit" Al.M suggested with dipole mid, the Orion speaker would be a better choice for about the same money.

Everything is relative, and Orion is probably one of the absolutely best speakers on the market, even if you compare with those costing 10 times more.

A recent thread on the BASSlist seemed to indicate that a large number of people who have built or listened to the Thor find them bass-shy. This coincides with my feeling all along that Joe didn't use all the tools available to optimize the TL and as was pointed out to me, after determining the appropriate volume as per Augspurger, he ignored this and reduced the cabinet size (internal depth going from recommended 16.25" to an external of 13.5" a reduction in volume of about a 1/3) -- A TL is not a small box, and any attempts to make them smaller compromise performance.

There are so many good designs out there it is hard to pick -- your 1st will probably not be your last -- not because you won't like the 1st but because you will get addicted and from what you learn on the 1st you will know you can do better on the next 😀

Of all the bits you mention, i have only heard the Vifa P13 and it is an outstanding driver... better than its modest price would suggest. It also mates very well with one of the Vifa tweeters with a minium XO. The TLb is a well sorted project using a pr of these/speaker.
