Default Woofer suggestions for 2-way standmount with BG Neo3 PDR planar tweeter

Hi all,

I'm going to embark on my first speaker design project and would like some suggestions for a woofer to go with a BG Neo3 PDR.

I'm nearing the top of the Speaker Workshop learning curve, so the most important thing for me is to go through a thorough design process. At the end, I should have something descent, but I'm sure there'll be things to improve after this first attempt.

I'm looking for the following:

- Smooth response so filter design is easy.
- Something that will work in a small (Perhaps 15 liters or less), ported, standmount enclosure.
- F3 of around 50 Hz, or a little higher.
- Around US$ 50 each.
- Other subjective qualities that lead people to believe it's well suited to the Neo 3 PDR tweeter.

Starting with Zaph's woofer tests, I think some of the Seas coated paper cone drivers are possibilities. The Peerless Nomex or Exclusive drivers also look good.

The GR Research M-130 (used in a contributed ribbon design on Zaph's site) might also be good.

Are there any others that might fit the bill?

I know about the Cryolite Monitor by Lou. It looks great, but I'd like to use a woofer with smoother response, and of course want to do it myself! :-)

Thanks in advance.

Andrew.

I am playing around with the Tang Band W5-704s right now....it has good extendsion on the frequency response and no cone break-up modes to deal with.

Also, I like the looks of the Aurum Cantus AC-130F1. Good distortion numbers and flat freq. response.

Here is a ribbon design with the GR130:

ehhh, I'd be hesitant to use the tang band woofer with such a nice tweeter.

Don't get me wrong, the TB is an EXCELLENT woofer for the money given the smooth and extended resonse, but the distortion isn't really great on it.

If I were the one building this I'd go for a peerless 5.5" driver (nomex cone or exclusing)

Have tested this tweeter briefly with the Scanspeak 15W8530K00 and it sounded great crossed at about 3k.

The peerless HDS 5.5" is also another worthy partner.

Makes you wonder about BG's own bookshelf that uses the same tweeter, its looks like a Seas L15! Must have some major crossover compensation involved.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

The Peerless HDS Nomex 830873 (I think this is the 5.5" you guys have suggested) is on the top of my list. Zaph's measurements show very nice response and low distortion.

Is this driver supposed to be flush mounted? If so, I think this will be difficult since the frame is truncated. The Aurum Cantus also looks good, but I'm worried about mounting that, too.

I'm also really keen on the Seas CA15RLY. It seems distortion is just a little higher than the peerless, but slightly more bass extension and the round frame are appealing. It seems a design with this driver will reach the low 50s.

I found Murphy's "Plop in the box" using a Neo 3 PDR and M-130 here . I'll keep this in mind if it turns out I'm too lazy / incompetent to create something.

Best regards,

Andrew.
