I <3 Horns!
I need a new system, i have the itch. Three way high efficiency high power handling mains to give me free placement of my two dayton 12" sealed subs. High frequency (6-30khz): http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/ind...28366&pid=1945 With perhaps some sort of acoustic padding around to help match the dispersion of the midrange horn. Midrange (200-6000hz): http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/ind...28366&pid=1075 Straight front horn loaded down to 200hz (Throat area 6 inches^2). Bass (60-200hz): 2X http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/ind...28366&pid=1080 Wired in parallel and tuned to 60hz. Triamped with chip amps and a simple 24db/octave crossover. This will hopefully be able to rock a party and cover most of the vocal and fundamental instrument range with a high efficiency horn. The two dayton rs 12" subs in two cubic foot sealed enclosures will then be free to be placed within the room to enhance bass performance and minimize room modes. What do you think? |

I like, but I think you need to come over and listen to my BiTonkens when they are complete.

IMHO you'd better forget it. 1 - The W14RC25 is a very nice little speaker but you need to cross it below 2500hz second orderdue to serious cone breakup and distorsion problem. 2 - The W20RC38 will not bring anything to your designe since the W14RC25 has a good behaviour down to 50hz. Moreover the W20RC38 isn't a real deep woofer. Conclusion : your choice of speaker is interesting but there's no interest to include them all in the same design. A 2 ways with the W14RC25 and the 22TAF/G will be REALLY more easy to built and will bring you MUCH MORE satisfaction. Good luck anyway. Lionel. |

what driver do you like for the midrange? High spl is a factor in this design, and if sixty hz isnt too deep than they will be fine by me.
I want high spl and instead of high power handling i would prefer high efficiency. I like the resolution and directivity of horns too. shoot |

1 - Modern rear chamber Seas tweeters have a generally a good behaviour down to 2500hz second order. Why are you looking for a midrange ?
2 - I don't really believe in Madisound's datas concerning the W14RC25. Understand me I don't criticize the speaker for himself. It's DIYreally a nice cheap toy for DIY but I cannot believe in the 90db SPL and 42hz FS that Madisound grants it. Why not a kind of MTM with W14RC25 (2 mid-woofers for high SPL) and 22TAF/G with your two dayton 12" sealed subs up to 70 hz ? Just my 2 cents... |

i agree with lionel,i have many w14's and they sound not so good crossed over high.try an mtm with the seas tdfc.this tweeter sounds fantastic crossed low.i have it crossed at 1700 2nd order.if you want to play loud maybe cross 3rd order.
another option is to just build this http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker13.html i beleive he dealt with the break in the xover design |

If you're interested I have the response of a W20in a ported enclosure. There weren't any spikes, but the tuning gave an Fc of 70Hz and an F6 of 42-45Hz in a LARRRGE room.
PS, it's "off-axis" from the tweeter.
