I am about to experiment on making a couple of 6 mH bass coils using 50VA toroidal silicone steel cores. Germans already offer such, called the 'Torobar'. Do you have any experience with such coils? Is their distortion acceptable, and up to how many cycles? The DCR is fantastic and I want to listen to the impact of moving from 0.5DCR ferrite frame I currently employ to 0.2DCR for this speaker's bass module.

I used Torobar coils, but I prefer the transformer coils. The Torobar coils I used where made of thin wire (1 mm), and my opinion is that these are better sounding than ferrite based coils.

I intend to use 1.4mm wire crossing gradually from 120Hz up to 200Hz. What kind of a cross point you had?

I thought of EI core but the limited magnetic field of toroid helps because I have to place them near enough to air coils. Thanks.

You can also try Duelund, I tried the smaller coils and those sound very good (laminated core). Only one drawback a bit expensive.

Maybe best are Mundorf EI Ferrobar air gaped vacuum impregnated flat OFC. I will DIY Torobar, listen for differences in damping and impact and see if its moving far enough in quality so to expect more from $$$ ready made coils. Cheers.
