i took zaph's suggestion on his site and added a side firing sub.i used the hivi d10.8 as i had them.i know they are not subwoofers, but for this application they should be find.as you can see i went active on the side woofers.presently waiting on a couple inductors to finish.looking forward to hearing one of zaphs design's

Great looking build!

By any chance do you have the option of running the 10.8 un-powered? I would think, if it is powered, it would be too bass heavy. Can you refresh my memory on the low-end roll-off of the sealed Vifa's? Do the Vifa driver any and high-pass filter on them?

I like the lines on the cabinet. Are you going to stain them a different color by chance?

Finally, I would be curious how the Vifa MTM compares to those nice looking SEAS MTM in the background.

zach,the vifa mtm is this

http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker16.html

i went with actice sub for simplicty reasons.it won't be too bass heavy as the plate amp a volume controls.i can't do any comparision as i have to veneer the other speaker and am waiting for some inductors to complete the mtm.
i will post my impressions and comparisions when i complete.

they have one coat of pickel oak right now.brings out the grain and changes the natural color alittle.i really like the natural with the black drivers,so for now it will stay.but these may eventually go to the cottage so i may stain them a pine color.
the lines stand out enought as is,so i will not be staining the lines a different color.

Hey guys.... Anyone have any info on these? I know John doesn't want the plans spread, but I have a pair and would like some information on them. And, yes..... I am thoroughly impressed with them!!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm getting desperate here!

Merry Christmas all!

Ron

Damn! Where's my manners?..... Great job chainenoble!!! Those look great!

Hi,

What sort of information do you want / are desperate for ?

rgds, sreten.

Hi sreten,

Thanks for the fast reply!!!! X-over schematic/components is the big one. I have a built pair, but want all the info I can get. There was a time when John had considered adding a sub in a floor stander. My pair is the floor stander and I would just like to be able to play around with them a little. I have no interest in spreading this information and respect John and his wishes not to do so. I just want it for me and the pair I have.

Thanks again,

Ron

Hi,

I thought I had a copy of the original article but it seems I don't.
Sorry about that.

Seems Zaph spent a lot of time voicing the MTM. Bass is described
as so-so, also for the BAMTM, but this is for a MTM or TMM. In
terms of an MT for both cases its not bad at all, and should only be
of concern if you play them very loud a lot. If you use levels that
would not strain an MT then both MTM's should fine in the bass.

The driver info is still posted on his site, an MTM with 4dB of
baffle step will come out at 88dB/2.83V/1m and be 4 ohms
in the bass end, should rise to 8 ohm levels mid and treble.

Using the driver parameters still posted the bass tuning can
be modelled if desired. I would presume given the careful
voicing applied an "increased BSC option" like the BAMTM
was not suggested, though I'd expect the c/o topologies,
but not component values, to be identical.
(Fairly easy to confirm by inspection.)

If they are, unwinding "L2" and little and reducing "R6"
are likely your only tuning options for a little less BSC.
(But the reverse is also always possible.)

To summarise the XG18 driver, very clean above 100Hz,
in a full range MTM more for the subtlety freak than a
volume freak. Distortion below 100Hz is not bad,
but neither it is good when compared to higher up.
Valve amps probably does not matter much, but clean
high level bass comparatively speaking to the best bass
drivers (none have as good midrange) a little limited.

A good reason to go for an MTM over an MT.

Bass end of the two drivers is essentially near identical.
