Default How does SpeakerWorkshop recognize new sound card?

I just recently install speaker workshop on my laptop and it was able to recognize the built-in soundcard that comes with the laptop. But I would like to use an external soundcard such as CreativeLab.
How do I tell Speaker Workshop program to use the external soundcard?

for Windows 2K:

pull up the Device Manager (right click on My Computer, click the Hardware tab, then Device Manager), go down to Sound, video, and game controllers, click on the + to expand the options. Figure out which is the built in sound device, right click and select Disable. Figure out which is the external, right click and select Enable.

You will have to restart SW, might have to reboot. The process will be slightly different for XP (aka Windows for Dummies)

There might be a more elegant way to do this that lets you still use the internal sound card, but I haven't found it.

Windows can handle multiple soundcards very well. Sometimes, but not always the software can select between soundcards, sometimes they use the soundcard that windows suggests (ie thh default one). On rare occasions, they can only use the "first" soundcard.

To change the default soundcard go to control panel, sound and audio devices (classic view), audio tab there you can change the default device for playback and recording.

I have no Idea if SW has a setting for this, but it might have.

Mightydub,
Thanks for the tip. I just came back from Fry's and it seems like there are soundcard that has built in preamp for the mic. I am trying to see if I can use one for SW. I figure buying a one with built in preamp is a little cheaper than buying them separate.

I would not describe windows XP as windows for dummies, in fact, with the silly visual theme turned off, windows xp professional simply behaves as a more up to date version of win2k.
