This will be in a pvc TL or horn design with a neo8. The goal of good integration and getting down to 30 Hz in room without breaking the back.

I've read through zaph's 6-7" inch results and it seems like one or two of the ascendent audio 6.5's could be the way to go. I'm also looking for relatively high efficiency (powering these with aa t-amp).

Thoughts/opinions appreciated.

the pvc pipe could probably be 2.5m long...would really appreciate some comments on this - thanks.

According to meilhush.org, the Fs divided by the Qts should be over 120 if a driver is used for horn loading, and the Fs/Qts of this driver is 135 - just enough to be suitable for horn-loading. It has very good bass extension - and it's cheap, too!

Here are some tricks for horn-loading speakers.

I'm thinking of building a speaker with the Neo3, neo8, and Silver Flute woofer myself - let me know how it works!

hi thanks - first what's meilhush.org - the address doesn't exist

I saw the japanese spiral horn site - will certainly try out of prototype of whatever driver I choose.

There's still the TL option - looking for low fs & high sensitivity (working with a t-amp)

Oy.

The Silver Flute woofer I suggested is very sensitive and has a Fs of 30hz, but you're only going to get so far with a T-amp.

Instead, I reccomend going with a full-blown active crossover, with a six-channel DIY amplifier. The Neo3 and Neo8 have decidedly wonky response curves, and passive crossover components can add up in price fast.

Gainclones are a nice option - the LM3875 can be built into an amplifier very cheaply, and should have more than enough power. Six LM3875's (max output power 50w, but I'd expect no more than 25w) should run very confortably on a 330VA power transformer.

While this seems like a lot of money, consider the cost of inductors and capacitors...and then consider the number you'll need. By using an active crossover, you can deal with some of the eccenctricities with these drivers (look at the response curve!) much more easily.

Also, you're going to need a couple of notch filters, if nothing else, and those hoover up a lot of power if they're passive.

have to admit, the sensitivity is hard to beat. Still wondering about "meilhush.org"

any SQ comparisons between usher 7" carbons and the silver flute would be great.

All I know is that Usher is top-notch stuff (for which you pay a premium), and while the Silver Flute woofer is likely inferior in every way, it also costs 1/3 as much. The Qts is also a little higher, making it less appropriate for horn loading.

I'd go with the Usher if you can afford it, and the Silver Flute if you can't.
