Hey guys, someone know some good drivers (nor expensive) to build an 5.1 system for my PC? im from Argentina and here is not easy to find good speakers packages/systems, so i want to build it myself, just ordering the drivers and build it using MDF or wood.

i can use 2 or 3 ways (but i think that will be too big and expensive, so i think that 2 ways will be ok.

If someone can help me i will apreciate it.

My budget is like 400USD for the 5 speakers, Subwoofer will build it later.

The easiest solution would be 5 FR125S single bass reflex boxes.

You get a quality driver, very decent sound without having to build a crossover and no need to build a special box for the center channel. Additionally, you get the benefit of having all 5 speakers the same which is desirable for surround sound. There are variations of this design as well to be found on the Planet10 website.

John Krutke has published this plan for very affordable 2 way.

I've not heard this one but it's certainly within your price range.

The last two don't address the center channel question unless you're willing to use the same speaker for the center and have it standing upright. Most people want their center channel to be laying horizontally which would create some dispersion issues if you use a typical 2-way speaker.

John also has this design for HT speakers. He lowered the XO point to improve horizontal dispersion so it could be laid on it's side. It may be out of your price range however.

a few suggestions if I may.

for an amp look at some sonic t-amps, 27 watts will be plenty to drive a full range speaker.

If this is for your computer, aka nearfield. i would look at the HiVi setup that is on zaph audio. just build five of those speaker boxes, and add a 8 or 10" subwoofer with a plate amp from partsexpress.

to build 5 gainclone amp channels, by the time you include the PCB's transformers and everything else, you will probably be close to $200 by it self. to do 5 cheap 2 way speakers for that cheap including cross over components probably isn't feasible...

the only problem you will have is getting the cross over from the 3" full range to the subwoofer, but nearfield you will probably be fine

You said what i was thinking. I just did a pair of FR compter speakers in a small aperiodic that turned out quite stunning .... and you may well be able to live without a sub.

You can also see my answer to the question just before about XOs.

If you go with a 3" the Aura is better IMHO than the HiVi.

The Sledgeling was the last link in my post. Here it is again.

I threw that in as a low cost option. Like I said, I've not heard it although I have played with the individual drivers in other apps and for bargain components they're not bad. However....
If you're looking for something musical I don't think you're going to get the same quality of sound from a ultra-bargain 2-way that you would get with the FR125S.
With a multi-way system in the near field you will most likely be able to easily distinguish which driver is playing which sounds rather than them blending together as a virtual point source like you would in the far field. That potential problem doesn't exist with a single full range driver.
