Horn on reflex port?

Normally the impedance of a reflex port is mismatched to the atmosphere so that the box / port combination can achieve some degree of resonant Q, and therefore function as a series(?) tuned circuit. If the end of the port was poked out the front of the box and had a full sized horn attached would this be of any benefit, or would it damp the box / port so much it wouldn't funtion properly?

Hi Graham,

The port operates in the lowest octave of the BR speaker so a full size horn would have to be the size of the “Claw”. But, if it were somehow doable, the port resonates due to the mass of the air in the port and the compliance of the air in the box. The radiation resistance presented by the air outside the speaker is very small and was lumped in with the rest of the port losses by Small in his paper. If the port were to be horn loaded, it would load the port enough as to require retuning of the now port/horn combination. It’s not clear to me how this retuning would be accomplished, but I assume it will have a lot to do with the design of the horn itself. You may end up with a Lowther.:D

It's gonna have to be a big port-flare to heave any significant effect at any normal box tuning frequency isn't it? So why not just avoid the poxy DR and horn load it?
