Hafler circuit - attentuating the rears

Well my JVC HT receiver looks to be expiring on me so I thought Id try the Hafler surround sound matrix setup with an old Pioneer SX. The diagram below shows a pot with 25-200 at 3watt spec used for attenuation of the rears. Isnt that actually considered a rheostat? Whats the best device to use for this?

And Im guessing that this is what the old Dynaco Quad Adapter was.
Its also shown on ESP but w/o a control for the rears.
