Hey Guys,
Am bored of my boxy looking technics sb-3050s and wanted to build myself something a bit different. At first I was considering coating a football in glass fibre bursting it and then mountin a bass unit over the hole with other small balls used for the mid and tweeter. Now I am considering using a pressure cooker and trying to mimic the Anthony Gallo Reference 3 design. the drivers I will be using are the mid and tweeter from some SB-3050s along with the 3-way crossover from said units. I was also looking at using a 6" aluminium woofer from some Monitor Audio Silver S6 speakers. Do you think either of the above will work well? The pressure cooker will have a volume of 6L, does glass fibre work well as a speaker enclosure material? Any comments/ thoughts appreciated Cheers Ant |

pressure cooker? kind of shaped like a drum? maybe it will act like one as well
i like the football idea though (thats football played with the feet, not american football which is played with the hands) fiberglass with something inside to reinforce it could work well. |

Hi,
Sounds like a bad idea all round in that the plan will not work well. What you are describing is very difficult to design correctly. |

to me im thinking of something that ends up looking like mickey mouse, a round face (bass unit) and then two smaller balls to the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock. It's the silluette of mickey mouse... check out these design... http://www.partsexpress.com/projects...lar/index.html the driver selection is equal to the BAMTM that has been raved about |

Yeahpressue cooker as in solid stainless steel pan with a air-tight sealed lid, only I ownt be using the lid and will probably weld a metal sheet over the top and mount the speaker on that. Alternatively some buoy type things have been suggested to me too - like the sound of the mickey mouse - never thought of that!

Dunno about the pressure cooker you use, but ours is anything but thin walled! These things are kinda like a small boiler from a steam train.
You are unlikely to beat the MA Silver 6's without spending some decent money and putting in a lot of work though I have to say. They are not bad. |

I intend to obviously use some foam to improve bass and reduce reverb, have you ever use/felt/seen a pressure cooker/ I would really describe the meal as thin walled, I know waht you mean although I think the material in question is too solid to produce that effect, need to produce a prototype to fully feel the effect, certainly b interesting to see.
From what I have read of the reference 3's they are some of the best speakers around, I hope that I am following the same kind of design principle - only using a small fraction of the cost (and knowledge, and technical skill, materials.........zzzz) |

I know the buoy type things that you're talking about -they're spheres from 20-40 cm in diameter with a reasonably thick and rigid wall. They come in bright colors and are generally used as floats.
Where do you get them?!? I saw a website that sold them ages ago, but I was on hard times back then and couldn't afford to play around. Now I'd like to think of loading some of these up as a fun experiment, and I can't find those spheres anywhere. |

Ok have found and ordered two, you are looking for a spherical fender. It has cost me approx £35 sterling inc postage for two of these each with a volume of 21litres and a diameter of 45cm. Just got to build the beastie now - recommendations on what to put in it in terms of foam? Also do I need to brace it and how would you recommend doin so?
