Default Altec 414 in 'Yves TL'?

Hi,

I remember seeing this project at Dave's t-lineloudspeakers.org site: http://www.t-linespeakers.org/projects/yves/index.html

It seemss like a 'classic' t-line (a la IMF, KEF, etc), also classic in a a sense that it has more 'guesswork' compared to recent developments, ie MJK's Mathcad sheets and other speaker software...

I've listened to these exact enclosures built by a buddy, and he used 12" JBL 2213 drivers salvaged from old studio 4311/L100 type monitors. I really liked the LF response even if the drivers aren't meant for these enclosures, and the T/S is far off from the Audax. And even if the enclosure is not optimized 150Hz up, the 2213 drivers shine in mids driven without any passive filtering (maybe due to more stuffing?).

Now it got me curious if these enclosures would work well with Altec 414's especially that the 414's T/S is very close the the Audax used by the author in the above project. Maybe some modifications, like increase in Sm and lower Z driver etc? the lower Z driver would facillitate the use of midrange comp horns too so that the horn wouldn't 'block' the LF driver. I wouldn't mind if the internal volume is a bit larger, just as long as the baffle height is ~the same... Any thoughts on this? Or maybe a sim of this enclosure using the 414's?

The Onken Petite is my first choice for Altecs but I never actually heard a multi-ported well damped BR before, so I really have no point of reference yet WRT trade-offs in performance Vs. the TL's. Although posts here by, fdegrove, kevinkr, and more recently the Onken implemented by experiencemusic.net for the new Iconic 15"rs at the RMAF Show had good feedback. Thanks!

regards,
fred
