Hi!
Please take a look at the attached file. There is a problem with my 2 speakers, they are old, so the rubber around the membrane is gone. Can anything be done to that?? //maciek

You can recone it. There is some company that does that: www.recone.com
They have a DIY kit.
I treied the link - It even is a swedish company selling
these DIY kits. - Technovox In Norrtälje
http://www.recone.com/crsweden.htm

They also sell a Video -
"Foundation of Understanding"
video on Loudspeaker Reconing.
This is the most comprehensive education on Loudspeaker rebuilding
you will likely ever find

It costs $40 - that money will almost buy a new Woofer!

Here is the main points in the video,
which shows how to do it:
- A: Step by step reconing instruction
1: Identify the Loudspeaker for ordering parts
2: Proper cleaning of the speaker frame
3: Proper placement of new parts - Cone, Coil, Spider...
4: Centering the voice coil depth for maximum performance.
5: Assembling the parts dry.
6: Adhesive applications.
7: Testing and evaluating performance after reconing.

- B: Step by step refoaming instruction.
1: Identify the Loudspeaker needing refoamed or re-edged.
2: Proper cleaning of the speaker frame and cone for new foam.
3: Centering the voice coil for success.
4: Assembling the parts.
5: Adhesive application.
5: Testing and evaluating performance of the refoamed speaker

Better than to use bicycle rubber tube
is of course if you could find sheets of rubber
in the size of A4 - then you can cut out a piece
in the form of a circle, that will fit the woofer better.

A very important thing here seems to "centre" the cone properly
so that it works properly.

Throwing good money after bad.

The question is - was the woofer a very good quality one in the first place? If it wasn't it still won't be any better than new when it is fixed probably. If that is the case, buy a new one. You will be much more satisfied.

Halojoy, is your house the place where old woofers go to die? I can just imagine your back yard ;)
