Hi.
I am looking for designs for discrete 5.1 speakers similar to antony gallos or orb audio.. or the bose cube style I can make enclosures out of FG but need some decent full range drivers that will work in tiny enclosures. I already have a decent sub to go with them. Cheers Amit |

Hi,
be a little more specific on exact sizes etc. http://www.zaphaudio.com/ Has lots of info on small drivers. http://www.falcon-acoustics.co.uk/ Also Falcon at some point had some Audax sonospheres : SP12 4 Ohm 120mm diameter steel-sphere System. Magnetic Base. £7.50 SPR12 4 Ohm 120mm diameter steel-sphere System. Adjustable Base. £7.50 If still available I'd grab them pretty quick. There is also the Jordan / Bandor drivers ............ Cheers for the links.
rather than drivers.. I am looking for actual speaker designs the people have built. Driver size I guess around 4" max. I want to build something small similar to the kef eggs, etc Not only do the drivers need to be small and full range, they need to work in tiny enclosures. Cheers Amit |

I'm aware of nothing that can reach acceptably low (80hz) in the tiny type of enclosure that you're after. There's really nothing that I can think of that'll get down below 200hz or so in an enclosure as tiny as you want, and integration with a sub will be very poor with a speaker of that type.
The low fs on the Hivi 3" drivers indicates that with a ported alignment you can reach down to 80hz, but I suspect that excursion limitations will limit the overall abilities of such a speaker. Sealed this driver will roll off at approximately 150hz in a .1 cube enclosure. Any smaller and you start to get a high Q rolloff and the subsequent bump in output above the corner frequency. My opinion is that, at minimum, a ported 4" 2-way is the minimum necessary for competent home theater performance. |

amit uk: I'll be building just such a 5.1 setup for my mom for Xmas. Her and my stepdad almost bought "one of those fancy Bose systems." Luckily I found out before they foolishly spent $3k on garbage.
This will be my first DIY project. But I'm keeping it simple and should have a design soon. My original idea was using HiVi M3N's and Dayton ND20FB tweeters. L&R will be mtm and the center will be wmtw, and mt for the rears. Should be very small, and with a maple veneer, pretty nice looking. This weekend I'll be doing the initial driver measurements using SoundEasy. I'm also considering using the 4" HiVi's. They should be at my house next week. These would be mt designs, instead of mtm. Unless the modelling shows one design to be clearly superior to the other, I'll be building both the 3" and 4" versions. I don't intend on highpassing the woofers, so a reciever with bass management will be mandatory with these. I'll be crossing them to an 8" Dayton woofer around 150 Hz or so. I'll post with my progress here or at htguide, so check it out, it maybe a design you like. |

Audax AT100M0 will work in a smallish sealed box, and don't sound too bad when used without tweeters.

that would be great if you could keep me updated with your progress.
Cant be that difficult to do it if so many manufacturers get decent enough results. Personally I would love a nice meaty pair of floor standers.. but the wife doesnt approve. Antony gallo spheres are the current favs but I am sure I can make better for less. Amit |

The Aurasound NS3-193-8A can go into a very small (2L) sealed box, run full range and deliver excellent sound. I heard this setup with an 8" sub based on the ApexJr Super 8 woofer at Planet10's house.
http://www.apexjr.com/speakerstuff.html The Aurasound rolls off a bit early and could be aided by a small tweeter but it's not absolutely necessary. The mids delivered by this setup were nothing short of spectacular. Another possibility is using the CSS FR125S in a 4L sealed box and possibly adding a single inductor as a high pass. Haven't tested this, just a thought. |
