Hello all, I got these (5" ICT driver) Tannoy arena studio monitor's and love the sound, but they have no bass to speak of. I am torn between making two passive bass cab's (kef 105's like) or summed mono powered sub, to fill things in. The kef 105 design looks ideal. But seems harder to design. I have no hard data on the tannoy's but they seem to peter out pretty fast below 100hz. Thanks for any imput.

http://www.kef.com/kefamerica/history/1970/model105.asp - can't say I'm overdone with the castors
The majority of listeners agree that two subs are better than one. Had you put any thought into using two powered subs? I'd be worried about copying the 105 XO frequencies with passives as a lot of the fast dynamics you're (i'm guessing) enjoying could be attributed to the small bass drivers; it'd be a shame to put them through another XO network & risk "sludging" what you've got. At least powered subs would give you the feasability of leaving the Tannoys as God intended Cheers - Jezz P.S: does it look anything like this? http://www.tannoy.com/ArenaSatellite

Hi,
a single active sub upto 100Hz should complement the little Tannoys. It will take a bit of experimentation with the half crossover to get the seamless integration most want. But persist. Using a plate amp with the controls built in may make it a little simpler but the quality of these "made down to a price" units is often lacking. If you leave the Tannoys unaltered then the total volume (SPL) will remained unchanged before to after. If you go for a steep cut crossover for both the Tannoy and sub then removing the deep bass from the Tannoy will allow it to play a little more cleanly and could end up sounding quite good.

Thanks for the responce guys, The tannoy's are not the new areana's but year 2000 units. They use a 5" driver with an inductive coupled tweeter (fancy wizzer) in a heavy, nicely made plastic ported cabinate. I can't find any info on them, but tannoy does make small sound reinforcment units with these drivers now. 2 small powered subs, each with thier own plate amp would be easiest. I could use the passive speaker level crossover. Their usually at 125HZ. or not. Any suggestions for a couple of inexpensive, efficient, low FS drivers to make subs out of?

Hi,
The passive high pass filters on plate amplifiers are a disaster area. You need an alternative arrangement. Only one plate amplifier is needed, with one or two cabinets. |
