Hi all.
I'm hoping you can help as this is a subject I know next-to-nothing about. I have a couple of old Goodmans speakers that got damaged during a house move - each speaker has a 10" drive unit and both of them ended up damaged :-( The speakers are three-way with a crossover unit hidden somewhere inside. The only drive thing written on the drive unit is a little sticker saying "4 ohm". I have been offered a couple of 10" units but they are 8 ohm. My question is this - what will happen if I just replace the 4 ohm units for the 8 ohm ones? If you think this is a *bad* idea then is there any way to make them 4 ohm? e.g. putting an 8 ohm resistor in parallel with them - but is that also wrong? Or do I just have to find proper replacements (and if so, where should I look?) Thanks all. |

Replacing the speakers with 8 ohm units will significantly alter the crossover frequency and thus the sound.
There is a repair method called reconing which you might look into. |
