Default Smokeing Speaker!! Why??

Hi Guys, after screwing arround for over a month I finally got my Gainclone Guitar amp working but now I have run into a totally seperate problem.....

I found some time to play my guitar through the amp and it seemed to work fairly good and it would go loud but after playing it for about 10 minutes I noticed a stream of smoke comeing from the Cone of the 12in speaker so I shut it down right away....

I have everything going through an adjustable JBL Crossover and I have a 12in and a 6in connected but the 6in didn"t smoke....

What would cause a Smokeing speaker??

Could it simply be a Bad speaker?? (The speaker is an old one that someone gave me....) the smaller 6 in speaker didn"t smoke so that is why I am thinking it might be the speaker....

Could there be something wrong with the Amp that would cause this??

Any possible solutions would be great as I don"t want to Kill another speaker and I would like to be able to play my amp.....

Thanx

it was turned up to loud OR to much distortion. You do know that a little gain clone amp really is not enough for a guitar amp..

I have a Guitar Preamp and a Overdrive circuit before the LM3886 Chip and when cranked it is Plenty loud enough to Jam with but I can"t play it for more than a couple minutes before I get smoke....

I didn"t have it very loud when this happened ,Maybe as loud as a loud TV set....

HELP!!!

i have a feeling that the over drive guitar distortion circuit that you probably used caused it to ocilate and over drove the 12"

Try playing something else besides `Smoke on the Water`.

I don"t think that is the problem because if it went into oscilation (Which is the problem I had before) the chip would get hot fast and the chip doesn"t get hot..

But I"ll try putting the Overdrive circuit before the preamp so the preamp will act as a Buffer and a way of controlling the signal into the LM3886....

I also have the gain set pretty high on the LM3886 at about 44 ,I"ll try setting it back to 33.....

I"ll also try disconnecting the Crossover and wireing the 6in and the 12in in series for a 16 ohm load which should be an easier load to drive for this chip......

I think the speaker still works but if I fry it I still have another crappy 12in speaker to fry.....

Cheers

Have you measured the DC offset at the amplifier's output?

What is the power handling of the driver? A lot of very old drivers could only handle 10-15w or so...

There shouldn"t be much DC offset as I have a 2.4uF Input Cap but I think the Input Cap is limiting my frequency responce as some notes don"t seem to come through....

I think I"ll try putting a 1000uF Output cap to block DC at the output and see if that helps.....

Yes, I know the Speaker is Probably less that 20w but when this Smokeing episode happened I was Playing at a very low Volume and the 6in speaker is only 20w and it doesn"t seem to have that problem so I am thinking it might be the Speaker....

Thanx
