Hi all, i'm not exactly new to this world of audio, but i am new to designing speakers. I've done my homework, and picked out some drivers. The only remaining problem seems to be the lack of figures on the tweeter I've chosen, meaning that I've not been able to completely design the enclosure. (I'll be driving them with a tube amp, so 8 ohms is about as low an impedance as I want to go.)
I am planning on using either one or two Fullrangers per channel, and one of these tweeters per channel. I'll probably passivly cross them around 3.5Khz. Keeping in mind that i am a college student, and thus live in confined spaces, can anyone reccomend a good cabnet design for a first time constructor? |

Hi Switch,
The drivers you picked out look like they should provide a nice affordable solution to your "confined" college living. Based on the specs, I think you might be surprised how much sound only one woofer and tweeter in each enclosure can provide. Someone else may be more qualified to respond to your concern about the 8-ohm minimum load for your tube amp. Looking at the smooth responses for both drivers, you might consider a series crossover. I'd recommend checking out Andy Graddon's website for info on series stuff. Anyway, enclosure volume is basically dictated by the woofer. Given the specs for the MCM 55-1870, it looks like one would work well in an 8.0 Liter, vented enclosure, tuned to 53 Hz. One solution would be to make the inside dimensions 7" wide X 11" high X 6.38" deep, with a 1.25" diameter X 3.25" long vent. Hope this is a good start. -Dave R

Thanks, that sounds like it would make for a very nice compact pair of speakers, well suited to the environment i'm in.
A series crossover, eh? gonna have to look into that... |
