today when i finished my rendition of the polk LSi7 out of birch, i was unsatisfied with the look of the edges. how could i round them off? extreme sanding perhaps?

It's customary to use a roundover bit with a router. You can also buy quarter-round trim at most wood stores, including Rockler online.

Long before I could afford a router I used the trick Joe is talking about. If you use 3/4" plywood and an inside corner block butted to the edge of each piece, you will have a 3/4" gap at the joint to install a piece of quarter round. It might end up that you are actually installing an accent strip unless you can get quarter round birch.

Home Depot (or its local equivalent ) has lots of quarter round pine in their lumber department. Also in oak if you want to go upscale a bit. Very useful stuff - I've used it for making grilles, though many DIYers don't like to use grilles.
